Weight Loss in the New Year!

How will your weight loss resolution hold up?

Many of us right now are thinking, “I was so committed on January 1st. It’s been less than a week! What happened?!”

Over the years we have been offering coaching support at Bonvie Ideal Protein Weight Loss & Nutritional Wellness we have noticed a familiar pattern: many people try Do-It-Yourself or Fad diets coming into January only to find out they have trouble staying with it after a few months, weeks, or even days. Sometimes the added stress of staying accountable on our own is just too much and we give up. Here are some of the barriers and support systems that can impact your weight loss.

We Lose Momentum

Here's what happens: After the first few weeks, we tend to get distracted; we lose motivation, experience diet fatigue, and slip right back into old habits. And the big one: we are missing ACCOUNTABILITY to another person. It’s difficult for any of us to stick to our own intentions - with food, life has a habit of throwing temptations and unexpected circumstances our way.

Slipping

Why do we slip? One of the primary reasons we fail in weight loss is simply that we lack a strong foundation that can help us integrate lifestyle changes into our daily choice of foods and eating patterns.

It’s essential to understand the physiology of how fat gain and fat loss happen. We believe that this is vital to understanding the physiology of the pancreas which is at the heart of weight loss. Really good coaching support will provide the learning you need to understand how the foods we eat affect your pancreas, and your weight gain or weight loss. The pancreas, of course, responds to what we eat: too many carbs/not enough protein = fat gain.

Diet Fatigue

When we are on a program for too long, or the diet food tastes bad, we can get bored. Diet fatigue sets in and that can crush our best intentions. A program that is too restrictive or if the foods choices are too limited, it is likely you’ll fall off the wagon. Choose a plan with high biologically available protein to help crush cravings and give you faster results, and a program with lots of variety of protein foods and your own healthy protein and vegetables.

How About Fad Diets? The Quick Fix? – Not So Much.

If you are following a Fad diet, you may well achieve short-term weight loss (though that “weight loss” may be more about burning down muscle than burning visceral belly fat). But likely if you do lose that loss is not going to last for a sustained period of time. Ever heard of the Yo-Yo effect? Yep, that is what eventually happens after a fad diet or many DYI diets.

Why?

  • Because you've never learned the basics of how fat loss and fat gain happen

  • You have not gained a sustainable relationship with food and the choices you make

  • You've burned down muscle. Remember, muscle uses fat for fuel, so if you burn down muscle in a diet you will have less muscle to burn fat at the end of the program than at the beginning – and voila! You put the fat/weight back on.

How can you stay on track? Coaching Support

ACCOUNTABILITY!

Lack of accountability is a major factor in sticking with a plan. Without having the support and guidance of a weight loss coach who provides accountability, it’s easy to get distracted, lose motivation, and slip back into old habits.

Most of our new clients, when asked what they are looking for in a weight loss program, especially if their New Year's Resolution is not going so well, will have "Accountability" at the top of their list.

Be sure you have a coach who will keep you accountable. Without having the support and guidance of a professional coach who will hold you accountable it is pretty challenging to stay on track for any period of time.

A Professional and Personal Weight Loss Coach

Having a personal coach will get you to your goal much faster. The first thing is to find a coach and a program that will give you a strong foundation so that you truly understand the physiology of how fat gain and fat loss happen. You want to have a solid understanding of how the pancreas affects fat loss and fat gain. A professional coach will keep you on track to follow the diet protocol, will give you support and motivation, and "tough love" when needed.

In order to be successful, you also need to know what success looks like, not just this month, but until you meet your weight and clothes size goal, and then most importantly, keeping your weight in check forever. Understanding your goals and supporting you all the way through a specialized program is what good coaching is all about. At BonVie, we’d love to help you keep your weight-loss resolutions for the new year!

Tips For Success:

  1. Find a supportive and motivating professional coach for one on one coaching support. One who will hold you accountable.

  2. Sharply reduce or eliminate carbohydrates. Eating too many carbs of any kind keeps you out of ketosis (fat burning) regardless of how few calories you consume each day.

  3. Double your lean protein intake. By eating more protein you will sharply reduce your carb cravings and hunger while keeping calories low. And very important: having sufficient useable protein will spare muscle prompting the body to burn fat.

  4. Drink lots of water. At least two liters each and every day will speed up metabolism and toxic waste elimination will help reduce hunger and make your skin glow.
