How excess weight is TAXING your body!

It’s that time of year to assess our financial assets and liabilities. Spring is also a great time of year to assess our physical health, wellbeing, and in particular: the burden of excess weight.

Here are a few ways that being overweight/obese wreaks havoc on all aspects of our being.

  1. Pancreas, heart, kidneys and liver. The pancreas is directly involved in fat storage and fat loss. If your pancreas function is out of balance due to excessive glucose and fat storage you can end up on diabetes medicine which can have an adverse effect on your kidneys and liver. The more weight you tote around, the harder all your organs must work. The heart, particularly with women can be damaged and overworked with being overweight causing dangerous cardiovascular disease.

  2. Coronary heart disease. Being overweight over an extended period of time often leads to an increase in your blood pressure – which is bad for your entire cardiovascular system. When you are overweight or obese, the extra fat increases vascular resistance, as well as the work the heart has to do to pump blood. This extra activity puts extra strain on your heart.

  3. Hypertension (High Blood Pressure). Excess weight gain, especially when associated with increased visceral adiposity, is a major cause of hypertension, accounting for 65% to 75% of the risk for human primary hypertension

  4. Type 2 Diabetes caused by excessive blood glucose levels.  Being overweight raises your risk for type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.  If you are overweight, losing weight may help you prevent and manage these conditions.

  5. High LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, or high levels of triglycerides (dyslipidemia).

  6. Stroke. Repeated studies estimate that each unit increase in body mass index (BMI) increases the risk of stroke by 5 percent. With a baseline BMI of 20, this means that a person with a BMI of 30, for example, increases their risk of stroke by 50 percent.

  7. Gallbladder disease. Being overweight/obese puts you at a higher risk to develop gallstones, especially if you are a woman. Researchers have found that obese people may have higher levels of cholesterol in their bile, which can cause gallstones.

  8. All causes of death (mortality) can be related to obesity.
